Brazeau Pumped Hydro Energy Expansion Project

In the fall of 2016, TransAlta announced that it had restarted development of a pumped hydro project at its existing Brazeau facility, TransAlta’s largest hydro plant. Brazeau is one of two TransAlta hydro plants, with a capacity of 355 MW and generating an average of 397,000 megawatt hours a year. Its current power purchase agreement expires in 2020.

The expansion would add 600 to 900 megawatts of capacity and increased flexibility, with an estimated cost of $1.8b to $2.5b.  The company is targeting 2021 for commencement of construction of the project.
