Basic Site Structure

The database been constructed using the Drupal content management system.  Node-based content types were created for four categories of activity (projects, actors and initiatives).    Additionally, there is a ‘province’ content-type for regions, including the 10 provinces, 3 territories, and 1 National-level node.

The field structure of each content type is broadly similar, though with some unique fields for each content type.  Address and geographic coordinates are stored using the Location module, which includes street address, city, province/state, country and postal codes.  Mapping is provided via the Gmap module.  A summary of field structure for the four node-based content types is provided below.  Taxonomy term-reference fields are highlighted in red; list content types are highlighted in blue.

Services/Use Cases

We make use of both the Organic Groups and Relation modules to provide inter-content connections and references.  All of the three main activity content types and the province content-type can be configured as Groups and Group Content.

The Relation module was used to provide connections between the three main content types because we wished to include additional information about the relation (i.e., Relation Type), for which we have used the Taxonomy module.  Three directional relation types exist: Actors-to-Projects; Initiatives-to-Projects; and Actors-to-Initiatives.   Both the Actors-to-Projects and Initiatives-to-Projects relation types can be used for both Projects and R&D activity type relations.

The list field for Project Status is shared among Projects and R&D and comprises the following options: Operation; On-going; In Development; On-Hold; Announced; Cancelled; Ended; Finished; and Unknown.  The Status field for Initiatives is unique, and includes Ongoing, Ended, and Unknown as options.
